One Minus One by Colm Toibin is a short story in which his narrator laments the death of his relationship, his mother, and tries to work through pivotal memories of his childhood. One Minus One was first published in The New Yorker, and touches on themes of memories and grief, specifically within an Irish setting. It is available free online.
